TEDxPeachtree chatted with her a few weeks ago.

TEDxPT: What is it about your work that keeps you going?

Carrick: My hope that the world of work will inspire and ignite my own children, and the entering and future generations to solve messy, complex problems together, to create beauty and music, and to love with their whole hearts.

TEDxPT: What is your passion?

Carrick: I am passionate about creating workplaces that work for us messy, complex, and delightful human beings.

My 24 years as a mother has been the most challenging and wondrous adventure ever. I am on fire with the continuing work of loving with a whole heart while letting them fly free.

I adore the company and the smell of my horse Grace.

Love. It can fix our world and enliven our homes.

TEDxPT: What’s the one place you visited that you’ll never forget and why?

Carrick: A random and unknown spot halfway across the Pacific Ocean between Hilo, Hawaii and Prince Rupert British Columbia on a small sailboat with five other crew. Alone at the helm, I was absorbed by the sky which was alive with stars as we sailed at 9 knots along a dark blanket of roiling, deep, infinite sea. My place in the universe in that moment was simultaneously crystal clear and completely irrelevant.

TEDxPT: Describe an unforgettable moment.

Carrick: Each of my three children’s births: the huge effort, the fear of failure, the complete and utter miracle of their first breath and their skin un-blueing. The potency of “we did that” blended with the deep knowing that no matter what happened forever more, I had a reason to exist.

TEDxPT: Three words that describe you.

Carrick: Open-hearted. High energy. Curious.

TEDxPT: What are your favorite books?
Carrick:

Wallace Stegner’s Angle of Repose
Mary Oliver’s House of Light
Brene’ Brown’s Daring Greatly
Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner
Emily Bronte´’s Wuthering Heights

TEDxPT: For managers who want to create a more human workplace, where can they go to learn how? What’s recommended reading?

Carrick:

Brene’ Brown’s Daring Greatly
Margaret Heffernan’s Beyond Measure
Peter Block’sThe Answer to How Is Yes
Daniel Pink’s Drive
Brigid Schulte’s Overwhelm
Anne-Marie Slaughter’s Unfinished Business
Steve Farber’s The Radical Leap
Carrick and Dunaway’s Fit Matters: How to Love Your Job (May 2017!)

TEDxPT: Who’s your hero and why?

Carrick: My sister, Jamie. In the face of unbelievable loss and difficulty she lives her life with hope and laughter, putting one foot gently but definitively, in front of another.

TEDxPeachtree: This year’s theme is “Together” What does “together” mean to you?

Moe Carrick: I work on and in the modern workplace. I believe that organizations from all sectors can and should be a force for good, and that the way we work with one another matters far more than we even fully understand. Together means everything at work because the social capital that exists between people at work is what solves problems, greats innovation and gets results. Our connections with each other and our sense of belonging at work motivate us to use our grit, determination, sweat, and tears to do great work.
